Description
An unusual, large knife. Field collected in Norther Java over thirty years ago.The wood hilt, scabbard throat and tip are finely carved on the outward facing side. The blade is roughly crafted with grind marks and forging scale. The ricasso is marked Umar, which may be reference to Umar ibn al-Khattab, the second Rashid caliph who is viewed by modern historians as the most powerful and influential caliph in history. Not intended to imply that this knife belonged to him or that it is that old. The knife was more likely crafted late 19th or early 20th C and the knife maker was honoring Umar by adding his name to the work..
The paint on the scabbard is worn but the fine, detailed carving is still crisp with traces of gold gilt leaf.
Overall length in scabbard 20"
blade 11 1/2"
This an Indonesian Scabbard design that we have not previously encountered.
