DON WILSON - DOCUMENT SIGNED 02/20/1951 - HFSID 276781
DON WILSON
Longtime radio announcer and comic foil for Jack Benny and other stars.
Document signed:
"Don Wilson"
, 1p, 8½x11.
Beverly Hills, California, 1951 February 20.
Wilson signs his acceptance of a documentary letter on letterhead of Columbia Broadcasting Company. Wilson will serve as announcer for a television special starring Lum and Abner, sponsored by Ford Motor Company, receiving 0 for his services. Wilson agrees not to ad lib or to use any material not approved by CBS, and that the network and sponsors may use his name and likeness to promote the broadcast. American radio announcer and occasional actor Don Wilson (1900-1982) is
best remembered as the announcer on radio's popular comedy series,
The Jack Benny Program
(1934-1958), on which he served as both the announcer and as a comic foil for Benny and the other cast members. At six feet tall and over 200 pounds,
Wilson's weight was often the butt of jokes
. The outrageous gags over his weight had to be modified when Wilson next
appeared on Benny's TV series
(1950-1965) as the medium didn't lend itself well to exaggeration. Wilson was also the
announcer for several other radio comedy or variety shows
, including Fanny Brice's,
Baby Snooks
, and he was a
regular on the radio show,
Glamour Manor
. After making his film debut in 1932 (
Million Dollar Legs
), Wilson also appeared in
several features, including
Niagara
(1953).
Often cast as an announcer
, he also narrated the 1938 film,
Ferdinand the Bull
, and Wilson would later appear on
several TV series
, making his last appearances on two episodes of
Batman
in 1966.
Lum and Abner
, starring Chester Lauck and Norris Goff, was a popular radio comedy from 1932 to 1954, spawning film comedies and this TV special. Binder and staple holes at top. Light edge creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
