MICHAEL LANDON - DOCUMENT SIGNED 04/17/1958 - HFSID 269548
MICHAEL LANDON SIGNS A CONTRACT FOR A TV PILOT CALLED
JOHNNY RISK
, WHICH FAILS TO BE PICKED UP. THE NEXT YEAR, HE APPEARED ON THE TV SHOW,
THE RESTLESS GUN
, AND CAPTURED THE ATTENTION OF DAVID DORTORT, THE CREATOR OF
BONANZA
MICHAEL LANDON.
Mimeographed DS:
"Michael Landon"
in ink, two 8½x11 pages and one 8½x14 page. No place,
1958 April 17
. In part:
"Following is the deal made between Michael Landon and Four Star for his services in 'Johnny Risk' series: Landon will receive 0 net for the pilot film and then it is understood if the series sells and Landon's option is exercised, his compensation will be as follows: 1st year - 0 net per film, 2nd year - 900...3rd year- 1100...4th year - 1300...5th year - 1500...plus...residual payments for all films he does...."
After his title role as Tony Rivers in
I Was a Teenage Werewolf
in 1957
, Michael Landon (1936-1991) appeared in smaller roles in
High School Confidential
,
God's Little Acre
and
Maracaibo
, each released in 1958. Also in 1958,
Landon was signed for the title role in a new television series called
Johnny Risk
(this document).
Johnny Risk
was aired two months after this contract was signed, on June 16, 1958, on NBC's
Alcoa Theatre
. Starring Michael Landon as Johnny Risk, the pilot episode costarred Lew Ayres, Robert Griffin, DeForest Kelley (later Dr. McCoy on
Star Trek
), Forrest Lewis, Bonnie Holding, and Alan Hale, Jr. (later the Captain on
Gilligan's Island
). The story, set in Alaska in 1896, was about the adventures of Johnny Risk, a gambling boat entrepreneur. In the pilot episode, after a friend loses his gold mine, Risk battled a corrupt new law designed to take gold mines away from outsiders.
The series was not picked up. Landon was then signed for the title role in a movie based on a popular song,
The Legend of Tom Dooley
, in which he played a Rebel soldier at the close of the Civil War.
Landon later made a guest appearance on the John Payne TV Western,
The Restless Gun
(1957-1959), where he caught the attention of producer David Dortort, the creator of another TV Western,
Bonanza
. The rest, as they say, is history. Landon, an actor, producer, director and writer, is the only actor to have three consecutive shows on television that ran for five years or more:
Bonanza
(1959-1973),
Little House on the Prairie
(1974-1983), and
Highway to Heaven
(1984-1989).
Charles Ingalls, Landon's character on
Little House on the Prairie
, was ranked #4 in
TV Guide
's list of the "50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time" (June 20, 2004 issue). In early 1991, after 35 years of working on NBC, Landon moved to CBS to star in the pilot of a two-hour movie,
Us
, in which he played a man released from a long prison term after being cleared of the murder for which he was wrongfully convicted. This was going to be another one of Landon's shows but, in April 1991, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He was 54 when he died on July 1, 1991.
One of television's most creative stars on both sides of the camera, Landon was, unbelievably, never even nominated for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Emmy Award. However, in 1994, he was inducted posthumously into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' Hall of Fame.
Light wear, file and staple holes, and usual folds, one just touches Landon's signature. Overall, fine condition.
